Chapter Summery: Chapter 1

The book, "Maniac Magee" is about a boy named Jeffrey Linoel Magee. His parents died when he was only 3 years old! One day his parnts left him with a baby sitter and took the "P&W high-speed trolly", into the city. On the way home the P&W had a famous crash because the motor-man was drunk and took the trolly at 60 miles an hour, into the Schuylkill river, and the trolly car sunk.
Then, because Jeffrey was an orphan, he went to live with his nearest living relitives, His Uncle Dan and Aunt Dot. But there were some problems with them, they hated each other. But, because they were Catholics, they wouldn't get a divorse. So they lived in the same house, but they had two floors with two of everything. Two toasters, two fridges, two T.V's.... you get the picture. So they had to share Jeffrey too.
Jeffrey hated this. So he started acting up, and one day he ran away, and kept running, and running, and running.
Eventually people started calling him "Maniac Magee", thus begining the story of Maniac Magee.

The first person to actually stop and talk to the new "Maniac Magee", would be a girl named Amanda Beale. And it happened because of a mistake.
It was about eight in the moring and Amanda was heading for school. But what made her different was she was carriyng around a big, brown, suitcase. Because of this Maniac thought, like him, she was runnig away, so he stopped to say "Hi". Amanda was suspicious. Who was this white kid, and why was he on the East End, where most of the kids were black? But, Amanda was friendly so she said "Hi" back. he asked if she was running away, which she in turn said, "What? No!" Then he asked her whay she wsa carrying such a big suitcase around. She then preseed to tell him that she had a little brother and sister at home who would color and chew ona nything they could get there hands on. Maniac laughed and asked if he could borow a book. Amanda hesatated, but then said yes see as he would be in town for a while. Maniac thanked her, thus begging a great friendship between a very smart girl, and a runaway.
